Goju-Ryu (Japanese for hard-soft style) is one of the four traditional Karate styles.
It is haracterized for containing many elements from the traditional Chinese Boxing of the 17th to 19th century.
The designation Goju-Ryu was created by Chojun Miyagi (1888-1953). A Kobudo Master once asked one of Miyagi's best students about the name of his Martial Arts style. But he could not give a correct answer, so he came up with the name "Half-Hard Style".
He reported this incident to Master Miyagi who finally decided to name it after the Bubishi (kept secret over a long periode of time) and its third sentence of the "Eight rules of fist fighting", which says: "The way of inhaling and exhaling is hardness and softness.", or "Everything in the universe inhales soft and exhales hard".
In 1933 Goju-Ryu was officially acknowledged by the Japanese all Martial Arts Association.
All 17 Goju-Ryu Karate Kata will be shown on this DVD from various perspectives.
Andreas Ginger:
I started professional training at the age of 7. In the first 5 years I intensively trained athletics, followed by two years of basketball. After moving to Germany I started Goju-Ryu training in 1990.
In 2005 I added Shotokan-Karate and two years later also Shito-Ryu Karate. Since a couple of years I also go into Capoeira and Systema more closely, sometimes even in Yoga.
I hold the 5th Dan and have an A-Trainers license. For 11 years I have been national trainer in Karate and for 3 years also the mental coach for the Olympic team.
